Author Interview
1. What inspired you
to write your first book?
My first novel, Pandora's
Succession, was inspired by the Tokyo Subway sarin gas attacks in March 1995
by the Aum
Shinrikyo cult and the 2001 Anthrax Attacks (Amerithrax). It's a mashup of both
events with some conspiracy theory paranoia thrown in.
2. Do you have a
specific writing style?
My writing style has evolved since my first novel,
mostly due to experience. I prefer writing in the third person where I pay
specific attention to detail. I won't only mention what a character a character
sees, but also what he tastes, smells, hears, the butterflies-in-the-stomach
they may have. I'll also pay attention to environmental factors such as the drop
of ice water dripping from a newly-formed icicle.
3. How did you come
up with the title for your book?
I cannot go into detail about the title
because it will spoil the story. However it was partially chosen after the Greek
Goddess of the Harvest as a way of branding the series.
4. Is there a
message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
Corporate greed has its
consequences.
5. How much of the
book is realistic?
It's very realistic since many scenes were ripped straight
from today's headlines. The plot itself is based on several science and
technology-based articles and documentaries. Some of the characters, notably the
villains, are even loosely based on real people. Furthermore, I even consulted
with a science professor from Sussex University in England, Dr Neil Crickmore,
in order to verify the science behind the biological weapon in the story in
order to make it as realistic as possible. Some readers will be curious to fact
check this and learn that the type of planned terrorist attack against the
entire United States of America--as depicted in THE DEMETER CODE--could
actually happen.

reading now?

7. Are there any new
authors that have grasped your interest?
Although he isn't a new author, I
recently read my first Lee Child novel, 61 Hours a few weeks ago.
8. What are your
current projects?
I'm currently writing a screenplay that's based on my first
novel, Pandora's Succession.
9. Did you learn
anything from writing your book and what was it?
Demeter was a huge research
project that spanned nearly two years. I learned quite a bit about the CIA and
how intelligence groups operate, I learned how a smart terrorist could use
something we take for granted every day of the week against us (no spoilers),
and I learned a few things about identity theft.
10. What were the
challenges (research, psychological etc) in bringing your story to life?
The
main challenges were piecing together the story. I already knew what it was
about, who the characters were and what their goals were. The problem was
bridging point A through point B and then to point C. Just when I thought I did
something right, I'd read it over and found a plot hole, which forced me to
rewrite earlier chapters. It was like a Rubix Cube. Just when you think you have
all the colors lined up, one side doesn't match--forcing you to undo everything
and start again.
